چکیده
Previous work has looked at the relationship between high school preparation and student performance in calculus-based introductory mechanics (physics 1) courses. Here, we extend that to look electricity magnetism 2), significance of what college math courses have been completed addition preparation. Using multiple linear regression including these measures prior preparation, examine correlation taking various final exam scores physics a highly selective west coast university. In 1, find coursework is not predictor 1 score. 2, having taken course vector calculus strong 2 (effect size=0.58 standard deviations, p<0.001), even when controlling for students’ size=0.27 p<0.01). These effect sizes are similar magnitude other incoming Qualitative analysis exams from reveal this “vector gap” due differences reasoning about vectors geometry some conceptual understanding circuits, as itself required perform well on exam. That is, basic related appears be important, but formalisms do not.Received 10 November 2020Accepted February 2021DOI:https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevPhysEducRes.17.010108Published by American Physical Society under terms Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. Imaging arithmetic: physics U math > physics + math
For several real-world problems, signal processing approaches are most successful when they combine the insight offered by the physics underlying the problem with the mathematical framework and tools inherent in digital signal processing. Imaging systems are a particularly fertile ground for problems in this class because they deal specifically with the capture of physical scenes and with the r...
متن کاملAn Intensive Introductory Robotics Course Without Prerequisites
Introduction We present the details of a first course in robotics, targeted to the 11to 16-year-old age group, and offered as part of a summer program for academically gifted students. The course features a fundamental emphasis on project-based and group learning, and assumes no student background in robotics or computer programming. For this reason, it focuses on solving challenging problems u...
متن کاملImaging Arithmetic: Physics ∪ Math > Physics + Math
Imaging devices operate at the physical interfaces corresponding to image capture and reproduction. The combination of physical insight and mathematical signal processing tools, therefore, offers unique advantages in solving problems in imaging systems. In this paper, we illustrate and support this idea using examples from our research on imaging, where the combination of physical insight, math...

We examine how the University of Colorado at Boulder has created the sustained the use of a research-based curriculum in the introductory calculus-based physics sequence, despite the significant increases in cost and time commitment. The adoption of the University of Washington Tutorials in Introductory Physics [1] curriculum required significant pedagogical shifts in the students’ role, educat...
